Why did America ban TikTok?

US officials have accused TikTok of threatening national security. They believe that the Chinese government can use this app for spying or influencing public opinion.

Under Chinese laws, companies are required to cooperate in intelligence activities, which is a matter of concern for US officials. FBI Director Christopher Wray told Congress last year that TikTok’s software could help the Chinese government access the devices of Americans and influence them.

Due to these concerns, the US Congress passed a law to ban TikTok unless its Chinese parent company ByteDance sells it to a buyer approved by the US government. President Joe Biden signed this law in April 2024, giving ByteDance until January 19 to sell TikTok. But ByteDance’s attempt to challenge this law in court was unsuccessful.

On December 6, a panel of three federal judges rejected TikTok’s argument that the ban violates free speech under the First Amendment. Finally, on January 17, the Supreme Court also unanimously rejected TikTok’s appeal, making the ban on TikTok effective from January 19.

What will happen next for TikTok?

TikTok’s future in America is uncertain. Under the new law, its updates and support will be stopped from the App Store. Gradually this app may become completely useless.

All eyes are now on the new President Donald Trump, who will take office on January 20. In a recent statement to NBC, Trump called TikTok “a big issue” and said he planned to delay the ban on TikTok for 90 days. Meanwhile, TikTok users and businesses that depended on the app are now in a dilemma, as the app has stopped working in the US.
